Complex Trauma/PTSD

Healing begins with understanding—not judgment.

Complex trauma often develops through repeated experiences over time rather than a single event. It can result from growing up in environments where emotional needs were inconsistently met, where there was chronic stress, conflict, criticism, neglect, or other experiences that shaped how you learned to navigate relationships and the world around you. Many people living with complex trauma struggle with anxiety, people-pleasing, perfectionism, difficulty trusting others, emotional overwhelm, or feeling “stuck” in patterns they don’t fully understand.

My approach is rooted in curiosity and compassion. Together, we explore how your past experiences have influenced your nervous system, emotional responses, beliefs, and relationships today. This process is not about blaming or shaming you or your parents or caregivers. Most families do the best they can with the resources and experiences they have. Understanding where harmful emotional and behavioral patterns began allows you to make sense of them and change them so they no longer define your life or inhibit joy.

How Can Therapy Help?

Some people may be hesitant to make an appointment with a therapist or may become concerned that seeing a therapist means they are weak or flawed. But therapy is about healing and growth through understanding and compassion. For more information, or to find out about appointment cost and availability, email Melissa Wheelock, LMFT today.
